1. Explain the differences between Server-side and Client-side code?
   Server-side code executes on the server. Client-side code executes in the client’s browser.
2. What type of code (server or client) is found in a Code-Behind class?
   The answer is server-side code since code-behind is executed on the server. However, during the code-behind’s execution on the server, it can render client-side code such as JavaScript to be processed in the clients browser. But just to be clear, code-behind executes on the server, thus making it server-side code.
3. Should user input data validation occur server-side or client-side? Why?
   All user input data validation should occur on the server at a minimum. Additionally, client-side validation can be performed where deemed appropriate and feasable to provide a richer, more responsive experience for the user.
4. What is the difference between Server.Transfer and Response.Redirect? Why would I choose one over the other?
   Server.Transfer transfers page processing from one page directly to the next page without making a round-trip back to the client’s browser. This provides a faster response with a little less overhead on the server. Server.Transfer does not update the clients url history list or current url. Response.Redirect is used to redirect the user’s browser to another page or site. This performas a trip back to the client where the client’s browser is redirected to the new page. The user’s browser history list is updated to reflect the new address.
5. Can you explain the difference between an ADO.NET Dataset and an ADO Recordset?
   Valid answers are:
   · A DataSet can represent an entire relational database in memory, complete with tables, relations, and views.
   · A DataSet is designed to work without any continuing connection to the original data source.
   · Data in a DataSet is bulk-loaded, rather than being loaded on demand.
   · There’s no concept of cursor types in a DataSet.
   · DataSets have no current record pointer You can use For Each loops to move through the data.
   · You can store many edits in a DataSet, and write them to the original data source in a single operation.
   · Though the DataSet is universal, other objects in ADO.NET come in different versions for different data sources.
   
6. What is the Global.asax used for?
   The Global.asax (including the Global.asax.cs file) is used to implement application and session level events.

   The DiffGram is one of the two XML formats that you can use to render DataSet object contents to XML. A good use is reading database data to an XML file to be sent to a Web Service.

   MSIL is the Microsoft Intermediate Language. All .NET compatible languages will get converted to MSIL. MSIL also allows the .NET Framework to JIT compile the assembly on the installed computer.

   No, it just reads the information from its data source.

The world’s seven richest nations have said a WTO deal to tear down global trade barriers was ‘imperative,’ following a measure of progress achieved by leading players at talks in India.”We believe that a successful conclusion of the Doha Development round is imperative,” Group of Seven finance ministers said in a statement on Friday, referring to the World Trade Organization’s stalled effort to liberalise commerce.

“We are committed to resisting protectionist sentiment. Substantially lowering tariffs and other barriers is essential to spur new growth in global trade and reduce poverty,” the G7 ministers said after their latest talks.

“We welcome recent steps to intensify engagement, recognising that substantive movement towards a comprehensive final outcome requires all parties to make additional efforts.”

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson urged fellow finance ministers “to encourage their trade ministers to achieve an ambitious (Doha) deal because of the round’s potential to stimulate growth and economic development.”

The European Union’s economic and monetary affairs commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, said after the G7 talks: “The possible failure of the Doha round is an important risk. All the major players will do their best to avoid failure,” he said.

The G7 nations and other members of the International Monetary Fund were due to meet WTO director general Pascal Lamy at the IMF’s annual spring meeting here on Saturday.

The causes of NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor failure were released in a preliminary report by an internal review board. The board was formed to look more in-depth into why NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor went silent in November 2006 and recommend any processes or procedures that could increase safety for other spacecraft.

The Mars Global Surveyor, launched in 1996, had already outlasted its expected lifespan four-fold when it suddenly stopped transmitting a signal in November. Scientists now say the faulty codes led a battery to overheat. “The loss of the spacecraft was the result of a series of events linked to a computer error made five months before the likely battery failure,” according to Dolly Perkins, deputy director of NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland. Perkins chaired a board tasked with investigating the cause of the MSG’s lost signal.

 The Mars Global Surveyor spent a decade mapping out the surface of Mars. Among its most startling discoveries, the probe offered scientists fresh evidence that water flows periodically on the planet’s surface, raising the possibility that it could sustain life. The MSG transmitted images of now-dried up water deposits in gullies, taken as late as 2004 and 2005, which suggested water flowed on the surface some time in the last 7 years.

 On Nov. 2 2006, after the spacecraft was ordered to perform a routine adjustment of its solar panels, the spacecraft reported a series of alarms, but indicated that it had stabilized. That was its final transmission. Subsequently, the spacecraft reoriented to an angle that exposed one of two batteries carried on the spacecraft to direct sunlight. This caused the battery to overheat and ultimately led to the depletion of both batteries. Incorrect antenna pointing prevented the orbiter from telling controllers its status, and its programmed safety response did not include making sure the spacecraft orientation was thermally safe.

The board also concluded that the Mars Global Surveyor team followed existing procedures, but that procedures were insufficient to catch the errors that occurred. The board is finalizing recommendations to apply to other missions, such as conducting more thorough reviews of all non-routine changes to stored data before they are uploaded and to evaluate spacecraft contingency modes for risks of overheating.

The same rules that make Earth plants green may make non-Earth plants yellow, red or green — but likely not blue, NASA scientists said on Wednesday.

They said their findings — which look at how plants absorb and reflect different types of light — may help narrow the search for life on planets beyond our solar system.

And, as a bonus, they may have answered a basic question about life on Earth.

“We’ve uncovered maybe the best explanation of why plants are green,” said Nancy Kiang, a NASA biometeorologist who led the study, which appears in the journal Astrobiology.

Understanding plant colors on other planets is important as scientists prepare for new information to be generated from giant space telescopes planned by NASA and the European Space Agency to study Earth-sized planets orbiting other stars.

“We can guess the plausible range of colors they might be,” said Vikki Meadows, an astrobiologist the California Institute of Technology who heads NASA’s Virtual Planetary Laboratory.

Meadows and a host of scientists from different disciplines first studied how light is absorbed and reflected by plants and some bacteria on Earth.

That led to computer model for predicting the color of plants on other planets and new insights about plants on Earth.

Chlorophyll in plants takes light from the sun and converts it into energy through a process called photosynthesis.

Scientists have long known that most plants on Earth absorb more blue and red light and less green light, but they have not understood why.

It turns out that more red light reaches plants on Earth, and blue light is the easiest to absorb. So plants make most efficient use of these two, and that leaves green light as largely superfluous.

“They don’t absorb the green because they have more than enough light from blue and red. They just don’t need green,” Kiang said.

As a result, plants reflect away relatively more green light, which is why plants appear green.

“It turns out plants are actually using the best light there is,” Kiang said.

On other planets, where other colors of the light spectrum might dominate, the plants might soak up more green or even more blue light and reflect back whatever is not needed for energy.

The scientists believe the same rules will apply on Earth-like planets in other solar systems.

“It turns out that photosynthesis is one of those things that is likely to be common. If we look for life on other planets, we will try to look for signs of photosynthesis,” Meadows said.
